Highlights of Fall’s Must-Have Color

Johannes Vermeer understood the power of a singular stroke of blue in clothing. In his famous oil painting The Girl with the Pearl Earring, he used ultramarine, derived from grinding lapis lazuli into powder, for the subject’s striking turban, effectively drawing an observer’s attention. 

Thomas Gainsborough may have inadvertently made a case for dressing (almost) head to toe in icy blue in his masterpiece, The Blue Boy.

The same could be said for the riveting effect of blue in South Coast Plaza’s fall luxury ready-to-wear and handbag collections. From cerulean and azure to teal and of-the-moment YInMn Blue, the electric appeal of this cool hue is irresistible.

7 BLUES FOR FALL 2021

  • 1 A single-breasted corduroy coat from Prada features a diagonal pattern inspired by upholstery fabrics of the 1960s, but made modern in traffic-stopping azure.

  • 2 The sky-blue Diana medium tote by Gucci bears signature bamboo handles and Double G hardware and is updated with neon leather accents, Alessandro Michele’s playful homage to the functional bands that once came with the original bag to maintain the shape of the handles.

  • 3 The Courrèges Réédition vinyl jacket in lapis lazuli at The Webster was inspired by the house’s emblematic 1971 style.

  • 4 Salvatore Ferragamo has an unforgettable name for the color of its nappa leather jacket and shorts with matching pumps: Footballer Blue.

  • 5 Stella McCartney goes for three shades of blue: aqua with wine for the Maisie dress, teal for the Frayme clutch and “blue lagoon” for the Groove boots.

  • 6 A single pop of azure on one shoulder brightens an abtract-patterned Intarsia turtleneck wool sweater from Loewe.

  • 7 A bright turquoise stripe across the shoulders of a mixed jacquard sweater from Dolce&Gabbana.

SUPERMODEL ALTON MASON ON STYLE

 

If you don’t recognize his name yet, you might very soon.  Alton Mason, dubbed by GQ as the hottest male model in the world and a supernova in the fashion universe, is the star of South Coast Plaza’s new fall men’s lookbook. No stranger to the European and American runways and campaigns of fashion powerhouses, Mason, a dancer/ singer/ songwriter/ filmmaker, brings his own brand of grace and dynamic movement to the latest looks from South Coast Plaza’s major luxury menswear boutiques, including Thom Browne, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Dior Men, Fendi, Versace, Berluti, Dolce&Gabbana, Zegna, Canali and Boss.

Modeling may take up most of his days at the moment but he’s heading for the biggest pop culture spotlight of them all – Hollywood. Earlier this year, director Baz Luhrmann cast Mason to play Little Richard in an “Elvis” biopic. Before preparing to inhabit his first big film role, the Los Angeles-based multi-hyphenate shared musings on style with us:
