Louis Vuitton unveils newly expanded boutique
Louis Vuitton unveils newly expanded Costa Mesa South Coast Plaza store, redesigned by architect Peter Marino.
On July 11, 2018, Louis Vuitton reopens its newly expanded Costa Mesa South Coast Plaza store which features the largest single level retail floor in the Americas. Located at 3333 Bristol Street, the store has been fully renovated and redesigned by Peter Marino and features the first in-store atelier in the United States.
Travel Destination
The new store is defined as a travel destination, incorporating art and cultural elements into its retail space. Balancing old and new, Marino utilizes techniques and materials that reference the French history and craftsmanship of Louis Vuitton, while carefully integrating ultra-modern designs into the California store such as the twisting high tech carbon fiber shelving throughout which references the horizontal speed of travel.
Throughout the double story space you will find references to the context, climate and culture of Southern California. The store sparkles as the completely new façade is mode of laminated glass and shimmering copper while the inside is a light, bright, modern and airy space, featuring three entirely new skylights carved into the ceiling, flooding the store with daylight from above.
Louis Vuitton Costa Mesa South Coast Plaza exemplifies how art is integral to Marino’s design process, with a range of artworks and cultural elements selected and designed specifically for the Costa Mesa store.
‘We always work to select artwork that represents different countries and continents. Louis Vuitton is a very forward thinking company when it comes to its engagement with the art world and thinks globally. The choice of the artwork, which was driven by a desire to echo and ploy off the architecture and the immediate context, a link to Louis Vuitton’s heritage of travel – and the climate and culture of Southern California.”
– Peter Marino
Carefully sited throughout the store are colorful artworks by internationally known artists, a commissioned striped surfboard by Peter Dayton (over 27 feet long), Farhad Moshiri’s ’embroidered beads on canvas (Girl with Orange Lips), large-scale photo by Richard Misrach whose photographs investigate human interaction with the natural landscape, and further works by Anselm Reyle, Aaron Curry, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Damien Hirst, and Polly Apfelbaum.
