Din Tai Fung Opens at South Coast Plaza
(Costa Mesa, CA – August 18, 2014) – The highly-anticipated wait is over for Orange County fans of Din Tai Fung, Taiwan’s most internationally renowned restaurant. The Yang family will open a new location at South Coast Plaza today at 11 AM. Din Tai Fung is most famous for XiaoLongBao, the Shanghai-style soup dumplings which became a signature dish at the original site in Taipei. Din Tai Fung has been celebrated as one of the “Top Ten Restaurants in the World” by the New York Times and is among the Los Angeles Times “101 Best Restaurants” compiled by its Pulitzer Prize winning restaurant critic, Jonathan Gold.
Din Tai Fung at South Coast Plaza is over 8,000 square feet, making it one of the largest in over 100 locations worldwide. More than 175 employees have been hired to staff the restaurant and eight master dumpling and wok chefs came from Taiwan to assist with the training and opening. Designed by Beverly Hills-based architect-designer Anthony Poon, the restaurant features a large exhibition kitchen centrally located so the making of the delicately steamed dumplings is visible to diners. It accommodates 175 in the dining area, 25 in the bar and lounge (one of the first in any location) and 25 in an exterior patio for a total capacity of 225. Guests will be notified when their table is ready by a cellular text message, allowing them to browse and shop while waiting.
Other popular dishes of the restaurant include shrimp and pork wontons with spicy sauce, shrimp fried rice and sautéed string beans with garlic. Din Tai Fung’s beverage selection offers a wide-variety of teas and smoothies. Alcoholic offerings are wines by the glass and bottle; domestic and imported beers, and a selection of unique Din Tai Fung cocktails, such as a pear & lychee martini, ginger mule and the black dragon, made with a Taiwanese oolong tea infused syrup.
The restaurant is owned and operated by members of the founding family, Joanne and Frank Yang and their two sons who represent the third generation of ownership, Aaron and Albert, both graduates of the prestigious Cornell University School of Hotel Management. Frank Yang stated: “Din Tai Fung is proud to make its debut in Orange County at South Coast Plaza, one of the world’s premiere shopping destinations. We are excited to bring Din Tai Fung closer to our loyal Southern California customers and also to introduce our cuisine to a wider audience.”
