SLOPE TO APRÈS-SKI CHIC

BY INGRID SCHMIDT

Latest slope to après-ski must-haves from our South Coast Plaza boutiques

‘Tis the season for an alpine escape. Whether your destination of choice is Stowe Mountain, St. Moritz, Courchevel or Colorado, a wardrobe of versatile, cozy-chic pieces is essential before entering that winter ski resort wonderland.

We have done all the legwork, gathering the latest slope-to-après-ski must-haves from our South Coast Plaza boutiques.  The goods include puffer coats, ski suits and pants, knit layering pieces, and all the gear — goggles, boots, hats, mittens and more–to suit sporty adventures and lodge lounging alike.

Retro-inspired looks are trending on the slopes this season. The Gucci Après-Ski collection offers glam skiwear sets, lug-soled boots, and ski masks as well as aluminum trolley suitcases, created in collaboration with luxe Italian luggage brand FPM Milano – available at our pop-up Gucci Valigeria boutique.

Canada Goose has teamed up with California-based sustainable fashion brand  Reformation on a collaborative collection of vests, parkas, puffer jackets and down-filled head scarves in vibrant prints.

Jimmy Choo has also made a foray into skiwear this season with a capsule line of snow-ready boots, ski suits, sweaters, puffers, totes, fleece-lined mittens, socks and more.

Our team of pro stylists are on call to further personalize your packing and sweep SCP boutiques for all the sizes and looks on your list. So all you need to do is pack, put your feet up, and relax with a hot toddy by the fire while dreaming snow-dusted trees and fresh powder in the new year.

Heritage Leads the Way with Today’s Most-Coveted Jewelry https://www.southcoastplaza.com/stories/2022/11/heritage-leads-the-way-with-todays-most-coveted-jewelry/ Thu, 03 Nov 2022 04:05:12 +0000 https://www.southcoastplaza.com/?p=84510

HERITAGE LEADS THE WAY WITH TODAY’S MOST COVETED JEWELRY

BY LAURIE BROOKINS

From the beauty of time-honored handcraft to the brilliance of rare diamonds and gemstones, the newest jewels from iconic houses are sure to inspire conversations about their stunning design and irresistible backstories.

Harry Winston

Trend may rule fashion, but when it comes to exceptional jewels, it’s all about timeless. That doesn’t mean jewelry fans must accept designs that feel too traditional or staid; on the contrary, it’s only intriguing to discover how many of today’s most-coveted diamond and gemstone designs are accompanied by heritage notes that wholeheartedly embrace the DNA of their respective houses. In other words, you may fall in love with a piece that feels thoroughly modern, without realizing its elements might hearken back to the 19th century — and beyond.

Then again, those details are half the fun when you’re wearing a diamond or gemstone sparkler from one of today’s most sought-after jewelry labels. Whether it’s the Coco-inspired elements in a Chanel necklace, the dazzling cut of a Harry Winston stone or the history and luster of Mikimoto pearls, each comes with irresistible anecdotes that add a layer of seduction in its value as a conversation piece. With that in mind, we’re highlighting some of the season’s most stunning jewels and offering a bit of the time-honored backstories that enable these designs to transcend from luxurious to legendary.

SOUTH COAST PLAZA HIGHLIGHTS

THE FALL FINE JEWELRY EDIT

Harry Winston

Since he founded his eponymous house in New York City in 1932, Harry Winston has become known for exceptional diamonds and gemstones, and the latter inspired a grouping of one-of-a-kind cocktail rings known as the Candy Collection. Each ring highlights a fancy-colored gemstone in a statement size, surrounded by diamonds and gemstones, ranging from sapphires and spinels to Paraiba tourmalines, in complementary hues.
714.371.1910

Cartier

The seductive Panthère was first introduced on a women’s Cartier wristwatch in 1914, and in the 108 years since, this diamond-embellished cat with the emerald eyes has adorned a wide range of the house’s most coveted jewelry designs. Among the latest: This Panthere de Cartier high-jewelry necklace features a pendant embellished with emeralds, onyx, rubies and diamonds, all on a diamond-embellished chain crafted of 18-karat white gold.
714.540.8231

Tiffany & Co.

Among Tiffany & Co.’s bounty of signatures, from its Elsa Peretti Bone Cuffs to its iconic Tiffany setting, the work of Jean Schlumberger is held in deserved high regard by fans of the legendary New York house. Schlumberger joined Tiffany & Co. as its jewelry designer in 1956 and retired in the late 1970s, and during that time was prolific in creating sketches of pieces often inspired by nature, including the house’s famed “Bird on a Rock” brooch. Vine and leaf motifs also were key to his designs, including this Schlumberger Monarque necklace featuring diamond-embellished leaves set in 18-karat white and yellow gold, accented with delicate bows and a butterfly crafted of gemstones and diamonds.
714.540.5330

Chopard

Among Bvlgari’s most celebrated signatures is Serpenti, the alluring snake treatment the Rome-based house first introduced in a yellow-gold watch in the late 1940s. Over the years Bvlgari has reinterpreted Serpenti in a wide variety of motifs, including the abstract treatment seen in this necklace and matching earrings, each crafted of 18-karat rose gold embellished with diamonds.
714.432.0963

Mikimoto

In 2023 Mikimoto will celebrate the 130th anniversary of the moment Kokichi Mikimoto successfully cultured a beautifully round pearl, and in the decades since, the house has indeed become synonymous with this lustrous stone, celebrated equally for its classic strands of pearls and for its highly modern approach to mixing pearls with gemstones and diamonds in its latest designs. The latter is true of this Akoya cultured pearl necklace that showcases a 17.89-carat tanzanite set in 18-karate white gold and surrounded by diamonds, which graduate in size as they lead to a beautifully placed set of Akoya pearls in graduating sizes.
714.424.5440

Piaget

The play of light on rare stones is an idea that’s key to many Piaget designs and is often blended with nature-driven elements to create jewels that evoke multiple luxe messages. From Piaget’s Wings of Light high-jewelry collection, this Heliconia necklace perfectly represents this idea and is named for the flowering plant with petals resembling lobster claws. Piaget craftsmen recreated the positioning of those petals using 130 pear-shaped diamonds and 16 brilliant-cut diamonds, all totaling 44.81 carats, while the asymmetric design finishes with a spectacular fancy vivid pear-shaped yellow diamond totaling 6.46 carats.
714.361.2020

Buccellati

For more than 100 years this Italian house has been crafting pieces that celebrate the art of Florentine jewelry design. Among its signatures is the mix of yellow and white gold and the exceedingly intricate metalwork that resembles lace; both are seen on Buccellati’s Unica necklace, which showcases 27 pear-shaped rubies surrounded by round brilliant diamonds, set in 18-karat white and yellow gold.
714.481.1130

Chanel Fine Jewelry

Gabrielle Chanel introduced the first-ever high-jewelry collection in 1932; dubbed “Bijoux de Diamants,” the revolutionary collection of one-of-a-kind designs put an emphasis on comets and stars, a nod to the famed couturier’s love of astrology. The house continues its fascination with celestial elements with its latest jewels, including this Comète necklace with open-front styling and crafted in 18-karat white gold, embellished with diamonds.
714.754.7295

Van Cleef & Arpels

Crafting artful pieces since Dutch diamond cutter Alfred Van Cleef and his father-in-law, Salomon Arpels, founded their Paris house in 1896, this legendary jeweler continues to excel at blending spectacular stones with handcraft that surprises and delights the wearer. Transformable jewels are key to this idea, as seen in this Pompon Leila high-jewelry necklace: a cushion-shaped green tourmaline totaling 11.87 carats is surrounded by diamonds in a coat-of-arms setting, which is removable from the necklace to be worn as a brooch. The tassel below, embellished with diamonds, pearls and lapis beads, hides a secret watch with mother-of-pearl dial, which also can be removed and worn separately.
714.545.9500

David Yurman

A bona fide rock star among jewelry fans, David Yurman paid tribute to his native New York City with his latest jewelry collection, which can be seen in the architectural elements of several designs. This Carlyle necklace indeed pays tribute to the Art Deco architecture of New York’s famed Carlyle Hotel; crafted in 18-karat yellow gold, the 24mm necklace features several links pavéd with diamonds totaling 8.42 carats.
714.444.1080

Bvlgari

Among Bvlgari’s most celebrated signatures is Serpenti, the alluring snake treatment the Rome-based house first introduced in a yellow-gold watch in the late 1940s. Over the years Bvlgari has reinterpreted Serpenti in a wide variety of motifs, including the abstract treatment seen in this necklace and matching earrings, each crafted of 18-karat rose gold embellished with diamonds.

Fall’s New Knits https://www.southcoastplaza.com/stories/2022/09/falls-new-knits/ Thu, 22 Sep 2022 16:30:24 +0000 https://www.southcoastplaza.com/?p=82394

FALL’S NEW KNITS

BY LAURIE BROOKINS

Autumn’s breezy days and nights beckon thoughts of enveloping yourself in the season’s softest, coziest style. From sleek and sporty to the ultimate in cocoon-like comfort, these sophisticated knits from today’s hottest designers will quickly become the favorite pieces in your fall wardrobe.

As summer’s sizzling days transition into autumn’s crisp evenings, few pieces feel more chic and effortless than a cozy, sophisticated knit. Whether it’s a textured wrap thrown with stylish ease around your shoulders to enjoy al fresco dining, a high-neck sweater that looks perfect with your favorite denim, or a languid knit skirt that transitions beautifully from the office to evening, these are pieces that combine comfort with an undeniable polish.

Designer knits this fall season also seem imbued with a decided modernity, from youthful, sporty styling detailed with exposed midriffs to lush, textural options that also put an accent on sustainable handcraft. Ultimately the most luxurious and sought-after pieces among this season’s knitwear offer unexpected details crafted in the softest fibers, from virgin wool to alpaca to baby cashmere. Best of all, fall’s most fashionable knits are also highly versatile, from their wearability to the convenience of employing them as layering pieces to be dressed up or down as casual or divinely elegant.

From their love of handcraft to details steeped in heritage, these six designer labels have excelled with luxurious, modern knitwear you’re sure to covet. Wear them as seen on the Fall 2022 runways or add your own splash of style.

SOUTH COAST PLAZA

THE FALL KNITS EDIT

Supremely soft baby cashmere yarn is used to craft Loro Piana’s Italian-made Mellbreak turtleneck, skirt and pants. Each piece is ribbed for easy layering and to create a beautiful balance of draping and curve-hugging appeal.

A polo shirt feels instantly youthful and modern in this cropped style by Miu Miu. Crafted in cotton and silk, the polo features a subtle perforated diamond openworked motif, with ribbed trim on the sleeves, collar and hem, while a knit logo patch adds a splash of vintage vibe.

A high side slit adds instant modernity to this ribbed-knit pencil skirt in a soft pebble hue from Brunello Cucinelli. Crafted in virgin wool, cashmere and silk, the skirt can be dressed up or down by adding soft or tailored layers.

Designing “staples women want to be wearing right now, myself included,” Stella McCartney designed this Italian-made tangerine knit coat with fringed hem, cuffs and collar to work for a wide variety of stylish scenarios. Prized for its soft, silky feel, alpaca wool was used to craft this cozy piece, while details include single-hook fastening and asymmetrical hem.

There’s a bit of on-trend Mod vibe about this cropped knit top and matching miniskirt in a cotton, polyester and wool textured knit by Salvatore Ferragamo. Both crafted using the mouliné technique of weaving different colors together to create one overall tone, these pieces are in a shade the Italian label has dubbed Golfo blue, derived from the deep azure hue of gulf waters. The cropped knitted top features a luxe ribbed detail on its crewneck collar, sleeves and hem, while the miniskirt is embellished with a pair of large patch pockets.

The graphic geometric details key to Giorgio Armani’s Fall/Winter 2022 ready-to-wear collection are highlighted in these separates crafted in a silk ribbed knit, seen here together to create a stunning ensemble with their splash of subtle metallic sheen. But with this cropped long-sleeve top with diamond-patterned sleeves and the maxi skirt with wide knit waist, you’re sure to also quickly realize how perfectly they’ll pair with other pieces in your wardrobe.

FALL FASHION LOOKBOOK: WHAT’S IN STORE

BY INGRID SCHMIDT

Eight influential fashion brands highlight the season’s must-have looks and pieces.

Autumn is all about a mix of tradition with comfort and joy. Fresh spins on forever pieces inspire dressing up and going out. The season signals a welcome return to the stability of sharp tailoring, albeit worn with a relaxed attitude. Suiting is reinvented in a variety of forms: A double-breasted jacket and trousers, a tuxedo dress, a three-piece short suit, a boxy blazer with a denim mini skirt–even a logo-patterned track suit or a denim jacket with matching wide-leg jeans.  The secret is in the styling. Slip in a spangled Fair Isle crewneck, a bejeweled button-down, a houndstooth  corset or a skinny leather tie and channel some fall fun.

8 KEY BRANDS SHOWCASE FALL’S TOP FASHION TRENDS

GUCCI

Creative director Alessandro Michele’s “Exquisite Gucci” collection focuses on impeccably tailored suiting in vibrant,’70s-inspired plaid or quiet gray GG-logo patterns. Emphasis on the double-breasted jacket. Skinny leather neckties, imaginative takes on traditional shirting (here, with fanciful crystal-and-pearl detailing), and standout handbags complete the look.

FENDI

Women’s artistic director Kim Jones presents cropped, mock neck jackets with high-waist trousers that channel legs for days. Creative director of menswear and accessories Silvia Venturini Fendi offers relaxed-yet-polished silhouettes, bold graphic patterns, and a new go-to running shoe for the guys, as well as riffs on the iconic Baguette and a soft trunk logo bag.

THOM BROWNE

Continually redefining tradition, Browne serves up his latest iterations of skirting for all in tonal patterned black or white. The layered maxi skirt-dress pops against a crisp white button-down and bow tie, platform spectators, and a boxy camel blazer with contrast piping; his elegant evening uniform is topped off with a playful cloche pom-pom hat and easygoing desert boots.

SAINT LAURENT

A sleek double-breasted black tux with strappy, raspberry-colored sandals is all she needs for evening, thanks to creative director Anthony Vaccarello. Sharp double-breasted suiting for him, with polished gold buttons and cropped trousers, is perfectly disheveled by design with rolled cuffs and an undone necktie. The finishing touch: horsebit-strap penny loafers.

DIOR

New takes on the skirt (here, long and pleated in a statement print, paired with a flawless black turtleneck) are a focal point of women’s artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri’s “The Next Era” collection. Men’s tailored khaki jackets by creative director Kim Jones dress up with a paillette-coated Fair Isle sweater or dress down with ripstop bermuda shorts and tech sandals.

DOLCE&GABBANA

The style messaging of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s collection is fit for the metaverse. Inflated shoulders and high-gloss fabrics for women took the form of a minidress with a matching logo bag and sculptural heels. For guys, the designers looked to Machine Gun Kelly as muse. Logo print track suits are reimagined by multidisciplinary artist Rocco Pezzella.

714.668.9142
Level 2, Saks Fifth Avenue wing

VERSACE

Leave it to Donatella Versace to add va-va-voom to suiting: a houndtooth corset layered under a boxy plaid jacket, teamed with a barely-there denim miniskirt. Her “Versace 2.0” men’s collection also caters to “the new generation,” featuring fresh takes on the signature Barocco and La Greca monogram patterns in punchy colors and a new high-waisted, wide-leg pant.

Level 2, Between Jewel and Carousel Courts

BALENCIAGA

Creative director Demna Gvasalia (now known as Demna) channels the ’90s this season with “The Lost Tape” collection. Loose-fitting, flared”raver jeans” with a low rise reveal logo underwear and are worn with neon crop tops. Denim jackets take on slouchy oversize proportions, while some pieces are deconstructed with frayed edges to suggest grittier times.

Why is Fall the fashion season that, more than any other time of year, seems to invite thoughts of revamping and revitalizing your wardrobe? Is it possible we’ve never quite outgrown that sense of giddy anticipation?

No matter its origins, the allure of adding new pieces to your wardrobe inevitably beckons as sultry summer weather transitions to autumn’s breezy, mild days and nights. Silver and gold are the hot hues in shoes and bags for the fall season, their unmistakable shine adding a high-wattage touch to your head-to-toe look. When reaching for metallic accessories, remember that a little goes a long way with these reflective surfaces. Indeed, mix textures and colors with a metallic statement bag or shoes to ensure your style feels current.

The hottest boot for fall reaches to the knee or higher, ideal for creating a chic head-to-toe look no matter your clothing choices. Whether you’re opting for the season’s sought-after miniskirts or, conversely, the maxi skirts that dominated so many runways, high boots are sure to create the sleek line you’re envisioning.

STATEMENT BANGLES

One jewelry piece enjoys the spotlight each season, and for Fall 2022, it’s unquestionably the wide cuff or bangle bracelet. Designers piled the style onto models’ wrists, mixing widths, colors and textures for a look that felt both put together and effortless. Indeed, it’s easy to have fun with this trend; mix costume and fine designs for a look that’s of the moment, customized and decidedly personal.

HATS ARE BACK

For truly standout style, few accessories conquer a moment quite like a hat. Bucket hats were omnipresent on the fall runways, and now in stores as well, perhaps because they’re easy to wear and, with a wide brim, frame the face beautifully. For a bit of undeniable drama, opt for a wide-brimmed felt style that’s sure to make heads turn. No matter what style you choose, this crowning touch should be the statement piece of your overall look.

THE MODERN MARY JANE

Unquestionably feminine, the Mary Jane shoe lately has undergone a style transformation, with designers exploring new ways to inject a feeling of empowerment into the style once reserved for schoolgirl uniforms. From lug soles to menswear-inspired details, today’s modern Mary Jane reflects the confidence of every woman. Better yet, the design works across a broad spectrum of looks, so feel free to have fun with this piece as well.

FALL FASHION TRENDS 2022

BY MICHELLE DALTON TYREE

Designers Doubled Down on Joy, Vibrant Hues and Sweeping Hems

Saint Laurent Fall 2022 Fashion Show

After a spring and summer season punctuated by miniskirts, minidresses and mini bags, Fall style has made a dramatic about-face with designers taking a decidedly more fabric-forward approach to dressing. Jackets and blazers are supersized, plush robe coats channel serious cocoon vibes and, most notably, dress and skirt hemlines have plunged and puddled straight down to the floor.

But make no mistake: Fall’s dramatically dropped hemlines do not portend a somber fashion season. To the contrary, the mood on the runways was hopeful and bright — in fact, even fluorescent — one of fall’s hottest trends. There was a serious embrace of femininity with sensuous dresses and skirts sweeping across the floor at Saint Laurent, Dior and more. Blazers bulked up, yet tailoring remained sharp as we saw on the runways at Louis Vuitton, Valentino and Balenciaga. And designers showed fresh —  occasionally cheeky — takes on classics, from fabulously feline leopard prints to luxe tuxedo dressing and elevated equestrian looks. So, we’ve rounded up some of our own favorite pieces this season — and decided that when it comes to floor-grazing hems: We’re absolutely here for it!

SEVEN BOLD BLUES FOR THE FALL

Highlights of Fall’s Must-Have Color

Johannes Vermeer understood the power of a singular stroke of blue in clothing. In his famous oil painting The Girl with the Pearl Earring, he used ultramarine, derived from grinding lapis lazuli into powder, for the subject’s striking turban, effectively drawing an observer’s attention.

Thomas Gainsborough may have inadvertently made a case for dressing (almost) head to toe in icy blue in his masterpiece, The Blue Boy.

The same could be said for the riveting effect of blue in South Coast Plaza’s fall luxury ready-to-wear and handbag collections. From cerulean and azure to teal and of-the-moment YInMn Blue, the electric appeal of this cool hue is irresistible.

In His Own Words: Supermodel Alton Mason on Style https://www.southcoastplaza.com/stories/2021/10/in-his-own-words-supermodel-alton-mason-on-style-2/ Mon, 11 Oct 2021 20:26:57 +0000 https://www.southcoastplaza.com/?p=62035

IN HIS OWN WORDS:

SUPERMODEL ALTON MASON ON STYLE

If you don’t recognize his name yet, you might very soon.  Alton Mason, dubbed by GQ as the hottest male model in the world and a supernova in the fashion universe, is the star of South Coast Plaza’s new fall men’s lookbook. No stranger to the European and American runways and campaigns of fashion powerhouses, Mason, a dancer/ singer/ songwriter/ filmmaker, brings his own brand of grace and dynamic movement to the latest looks from South Coast Plaza’s major luxury menswear boutiques, including Thom Browne, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, Dior Men, Fendi, Versace, Berluti, Dolce&Gabbana, Zegna, Canali and Boss.

Modeling may take up most of his days at the moment but he’s heading for the biggest pop culture spotlight of them all – Hollywood. Earlier this year, director Baz Luhrmann cast Mason to play Little Richard in an “Elvis” biopic. Before preparing to inhabit his first big film role, the Los Angeles-based multi-hyphenate shared musings on style with us:
